It took one loss for Michael Carrick before Paul Scholes could start his “They play like shit” comments. The English media, who until the Newcastle game had put Carrick as the big favourite to manage Manchester United from next season, suddenly found reason for uncertainty. Now there is talk again that Manchester United need an established “coach cannon”.

The Manchester Evening News points out that the United management is now wise to “explore the possibility of hiring one of two ‘elite managers’, before considering settling for Carrick”. Journalist for the local newspaper, Steven Railston, insisted that United must first look at PSG’s Luis Enrique and Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann.

“The 44-year-old (Carrick) has exceeded expectations since returning in January and should be hired permanently if he leads the club into the Champions League, provided elite managers are not available. Who falls into the elite category? Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann are two who should be considered ahead of Carrick, regardless of what he achieves this season, Railston begins.

“They have a proven track record of success at the highest level, and have achieved more than Carrick in their careers. United should work on Enrique and Nagelsmann to gauge their interest in taking the job. Enrique has won the Champions League twice, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, and has delivered domestic trophies for both clubs, Railston doses.

Reports from France signal that there is very little chance of luring Enrique out of PSG, Nagelsmann, on the other hand, is very likely.

A recent update from journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Nagelsmann, along with Roberto Martinez and Roberto De Zerbi, are the three managers Man Utd are focusing on right now.

According to Teamtalk’s sources , “Nagelsmann has now turned his attention to the vacant United manager’s job, and intermediaries have linked his name to the club and made sure he is in the mix.”
