Manchester United have drawn up a five-man shortlist for their midfield ahead of the January transfer window, but there is one that really stands out as Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s favourite.
Amorim’s favourite on Manchester United’s five-man wish list
Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are intensifying their search for midfield reinforcements as the January 2026 transfer window approaches, with a Sporting CP star high on the shortlist, TEAMtalk’s Fraser Fletcher has revealed.

Morten Hjulmand, a 26-year-old Danish midfielder, is “absolutely loved” by Amorim, who coached him at Sporting before joining United.
The pair’s successful partnership in Lisbon, where Hjulmand anchored a title-winning team with his toughness and precise passing game, makes him a natural fit for Amorim’s vision at Old Trafford.
Somewhat surprisingly, TEAMtalk writes that Manchester United are optimistic about securing Hjulmand for around £50 million, despite his £70 million release clause, as Sporting could be open to negotiations given their relationship with their former manager.
His arrival will provide a robust, versatile presence capable of dictating pace and protecting the defensive line, but others are also being considered.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton remains a top target. The 21-year-old Englishman will claim at least £70 million in the middle of the season.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also highly rated but considered “too difficult” for January, with Brighton’s valuation of almost £100 million and his contract until 2029 posing significant hurdles.
United have also confirmed their interest in Jobe Bellingham, who is currently struggling for game time at Borussia Dortmund.
Meanwhile, Porto’s Victor Froholdt is being closely watched by United and other European giants.
