Wimbledon has had a changing of the guard. The new king of the tournament was 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, and the title of queen was won by Czech player Marketa Vondrousova. It was a historic tournament.
This year’s edition of Wimbledon was historic in many ways. This year, Roger Federer attended the tournament solely as a supporter, having retired from the sport since last fall. Women were allowed to wear a color other than white under their skirts, and the men’s tournament was won by someone other than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray for the first time since 2003.
Marketa Vondrousova has become the new queen of Wimbledon. The Czech won Saturday’s final 6-4, 6-4 and is the third Czech woman, next to Jana Novotna (1998) and Petra Kvitová (2011 and 2014), to win Wimbledon. The Czech defeated Ons Jabeur in the final. For Jabeur, it was the second Wimbledon final in a row. The Tunisian lost last year’s final.
The men’s tournament has had a changing of the guard. After 20 years of only four names winning Wimbledon – Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray – the competition has a new champion. 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz became the king of Wimbledon. The Spaniard broke the winning streak of Novak Djokovic, who hasn’t lost at Wimbledon in 10 years. Moreover, the Spaniard prevented the Serbian from making historic feats. Had the Serbian won, he would have matched Roger Federer, who has won the tournament eight times, and would have become the only player in history with 24 Grand Slam titles, two ahead of Rafael Nadal. However, the Serb was stopped by Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard defeated Djokovic in five sets after nearly five hours of play.
