Norwegian national team hero Thelo Aasgaard, who landed at Rangers in a transfer from Luton in the summer, has risen for Norway and contributed goals in the World Cup qualifiers, but the attacking midfielder has not had the same positive development at his new club.

One reason can certainly be blamed on the club itself how much is not right this season. – Rangers tried to tighten up in the summer and probably had a busy window, but it is not enough and new manager Danny Rohl already knows what he wants to prioritize.

Russell Martin brought in 13 new faces to Ibrox over the summer, before a poor start to the season saw him sacked as manager and replaced by Rohl, as the Ibrox club try to salvage their season both domestically and in Europe.

The German has started his tenure relatively well, with five wins and three draws from his first 11 games in charge, with Rangers currently nine points behind the top of the table after playing one game less than league leaders Hearts. Now, after having a chance to study his squad and find out about the players he has, he has made a decision on what he wants in January.

Rangers make David Watson top target

Scoring goals has mostly been a major issue for the Rangers this season, with reports suggesting that Rohl and the Rangers have made plans to make three signings in January, with talks already held over a deal for a new number nine.

But it has now emerged that the Light Blues’ top target for January is a new attacking midfielder, with Kilmarnock star David Watson emerging as the priority.

The 20-year-old has already been a regular at the club for several seasons, and he has started 15 of Kilmarnock’s 16 games in the Scottish Elite League so far this season, with three goals and an assist in the process. But despite his best efforts, the team has only managed two wins, and now a winter departure is predicted.

The midfield area has also been an issue for Rangers, with Nicolas Raskin, Mohammed Diomande and Connor Barron all having alternating seasons, and Watson’s ability to play deeper if needed will also give Rohl tactical options.

The Scottish press believes that Watson would be a big improvement from Aasgaard

If Watson arrives, it would seem inevitable that he would take the place of Thelo Aasgaard in the Ibrox starting line-up, as the Norwegian has struggled since his move from Luton in the summer.

The 23-year-old has only registered one goal and one assist so far in all competitions for Rangers, and considering he plays in a team that is much better than Kilmarnock, it is quite worrying that he is being surpassed by a younger player in Watson.

Watson, who has been described as “excellent”, would also bring another Scottish player into the club, something fans have complained the club has lacked in recent years, and it would immediately create a greater connection off the pitch.

It is unlikely that it will be a particularly expensive deal, but if Rohl gets his way in January, he will improve on Aasgaard and strengthen the squad in one fell swoop.
