The third Grand Slam tournament of the year has begun. Wimbledon is considered by many to be the most important slam of the year. What prize awaits this year’s winners?
Wimbledon is considered the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. It has been played since 1877, which makes it the oldest Grand Slam tournament in the history of the discipline.
This year’s edition of Wimbledon will be unique. Roger Federer and Serena Williams, who retired last fall, are not taking part in the tournament. Rafael Nadal, who is recovering from a hip injury, will also be absent from Wimbledon. It’s also the first time women can wear shorts other than white. There has also been a change in the reward for winning the tournament.
What winnings do tennis players play for at Wimbledon? Wimbledon recently announced that the total prize pool for this year’s tournament is 44,700,000 British pounds. This means an increase of 11.2 percent compared to the previous year and an increase of 17.1 percent compared to 2019. The winners of the Wimbledon singles championship will receive a prize of 2,350,000 pounds, and the runners-up will receive 1,175,000 pounds. Doubles winners will receive 701,619 euros, finalists PLN 1,556,492.06.
Interestingly, compared to other grand slam tournaments, Wimbledon 2023 surpasses the 49.6 million euros offered by Roland Garros and the nearly 49 million distributed by the Australian Open this year. However, last year’s US Open had a higher prize money amount of 55.5 million euros.
