Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future is still uncertain – but a former Liverpool player believes one thing has a big impact on his decision: The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and Real Madrid have made no secret of the fact that they are very interested.
The 26-year-old who has only played for Liverpool has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup and two Carabao Cups with his boyhood club, but from January 1, 2025, he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract deal with a foreign club.
Of course, in an ideal world, if he were to leave, Liverpool would at least get a high fee, given his talent. But he will leave for free if no new contract can be agreed between the club and the player.
The England international has continued to play an integral part in Arne Slot’s team’s success at the start of the season, playing 18 times with Liverpool currently sitting top of the Premier League and the 36-team Champions League group stage.
Yesterday, Liverpool won their sixth straight win in the Champions League.
But former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson believes in a social media update one important thing will determine the player’s future.
“If Liverpool win the Premier League, then I think he [Trent Alexander-Arnold] will stay,” Johnson
“I don’t think he wants to leave, and I don’t think Liverpool want him to leave, but the longer this goes on, the less likely he is to stay.
“He’s going to be at Liverpool or Real Madrid next season. I don’t think he’ll go anywhere else, and I don’t think any other club can compete with the two of them.
If Johnson’s prediction is correct, this will be music to the ears of most Liverpool fans, as replacing a player of such quality will prove costly.
And owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are not the type to go out and spend £100 million on a right-back.
Although Conor Bradley would be an option for Slot, he would likely need to recruit a backup right-back if Alexander-Arnold were to join the Spanish club.
Both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah find themselves in a similar position to Alexander-Arnold, as their current deals expire towards the end of the current campaign.
