Liverpool have not only according to Napoli, who have been eager to land a transfer for Darwin Núñez, put too high a price on their 26-year-old striker. Sky reported just over a week ago that the reigning Serie A champions were willing to pay 50 million euros, plus bonuses of another 5 million euros.

Liverpool, who were thinking of using Darwin Núñez’s sale to finance part of a transfer for Alexander Isak from Newcastle, need to think about finding solutions. Although the finances are very good, Liverpool will challenge UEFA’s financial rules with both giant purchases of Florian Wirtz for 125 million and at least the same for Isak without having significant sales.

Napoli withdraw from Nunez deal

Fabrizio Romano reports that Napoli have informed Liverpool that the deal can be considered “called off”. The amount Liverpool is demanding is easily seen as too high. Instead, Napoli will sign Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese. Núñez is still expected to leave Liverpool this summer, but the list of potential clubs is on the cards. Saudi Arabian clubs are still interested in the Uruguayan, but it can’t possibly be a big deal.

Núñez, who only started eight Premier League games last season, has three years left on his contract with Liverpool.

Earlier on Tuesday, The Athletic reported that Liverpool had contacted Newcastle to discuss a transfer for Alexander Isak.
