When someone calls from Wrexham, associations are automatically drawn to Hollywood brilliance with Ryan Reynolds and company, plus a documentary that has followed the Welsh club’s journey over the past few years through three promotions. This summer, the club’s director called a Manchester United star who had just left Old Trafford. The response was not quite as expected.
Christian Eriksen has also been on quite a journey, this one of the dramatic kind. Cardiac arrest at the European Championships, return to top-level football, first for Brentford, then Manchester United from 2022-25. In the summer, Wrexham director Michael Williamson called Eriksen’s agent with an offer.

“I contacted his agent, and I thought it was interesting that in the first conversation he said that we didn’t want his (Eriksen’s) story in a documentary. We have had many opportunities to do so. He thought we were calling because we wanted to make a documentary and not because of his football skills,” the Wrexham director begins, according to ESPN.
Which was a bit put off by the response from the agent.
“I hadn’t even thought about it. Of course, I know his story, but that’s not why we called. We called because he was an interesting footballer and we were looking for players who could play for us in the Championship. We were looking for people who could make a difference. I explained it. That we were trying to put together a competitive team, and I wasn’t thinking from a documentary perspective at all. Then we had a good conversation,” says the director.

Despite good conversation, Eriksen opted for Wolfsburg and the Bundesliga, while Wrexham without Eriksen are a long way from new promotion, with 17 points from 13 games.
