Wrexham are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of their first season back in the Championship.
Wrexham could be on the verge of taking advantage of another Championship club’s problems, following reports that they have started talks with an experienced striker at this level.

Ryan Reynolds’ ambitious club, which he co-owns with actor Rob McElhenney, has secured three promotions in a row to rise from the National League to the Championship. They start their new season against Southampton and have already been active in the transfer market with the signings of Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward and Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie.
Defender Liberato Cacace arrived in a high-profile move from Serie A club Empoli in a deal reportedly worth over £1 million – which would be a record transfer fee under Reynolds and McElhenney’s ownership, as they try to build a squad that can compete in the Championship. It’s been over 40 years since Wrexham last played at this level.
Now it is reported that Wrexham have started talks with free agent Josh Windass, after he was released from crisis club Sheffield Wednesday this week.
Windass made over 150 appearances for Wednesday in the Championship and League One, but left Hillsborough by mutual agreement after a summer of chaos in Sheffield. Unpaid wages and transfer embargoes have put a stop to Wednesday’s preparations for the new season, and Windass and fellow striker Michael Smith both left the club following an agreement to terminate their contracts.
Windass (31) is the son of Premier League hero Dean Windass, who scored the iconic goal that sent Hull City to the top flight in 2008.
The elder Windass also played for Bradford in the Premier League, making over 600 career appearances in 21 years.
Wrexham are currently on tour of Australia and New Zealand, where they beat Melbourne Victory in their first friendly match, but lost to Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix. According to BBC Sport, talks with Josh Windass will take place when they return to Wales after the game against Wellington early Saturday morning. It is also added that other Championship clubs are considering Windass as a possible signing.
