The Spanish manager has a clear idea of what the midfielder Real Madrid needs.
Xabi Alonso has a very clear vision for his Real Madrid: he needs a midfielder who sets the pace and brings balance to the team in the post-Kroos-and-Modric era. And one name shines particularly brightly on his radar: Alexis Mac Allister. The Liverpool-Argentine has become the big obsession of the Basque coach, who believes that his profile would fit perfectly into the style of play he wants to establish at the Santiago Bernabéu, along with the rest of the midfielders in the squad, according to Defensa Central.

Although the board, led by Florentino Pérez, insists that the squad is already closed for the 2025/26 season, the planning work does not stop. The club’s management continues to assess profiles to strengthen a midfield that has lost two legends and needs new references. In this context, Mac Allister has taken advantages as Alonso’s favorite, over other names such as Enzo Fernández, Zubimendi or even Rodri.
Xabi Alonso wants Alexis Mac Allister
The Argentine footballer is under contract with Liverpool until 2028, and his current value stands at around €100 million – a high sum that complicates any immediate signing attempt. Nevertheless, Real Madrid do not rule out a move in 2026, especially if there is a relevant departure in midfield. Moreover, his style of play and ability to play at different levels in midfield make him an ideal piece to follow up young talents such as Arda Güler or the recently arrived Franco Mastantuono.
Sources close to the club confirm that Mac Allister is being closely watched, and that his name is still on the table. For now, there will be no movements, but his profile is very well liked both sportingly and personally: trained in Argentine football, experience from the Premier League, world champion – and still with development potential.
Xabi Alonso wants a leader for his midfield. And if it had been up to him, that name would have been Alexis Mac Allister.
