Xabi Alonso has been linked with a move to Anfield to the extent that several media outlets are reporting that he has said YES to taking over for Arne Slot. Liverpool who are in a disappointing 6th place before they host Tottenham (who are in an even bigger crisis) at Anfield on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso’s agent, Inaki Ibanez, is said to have spoken out amid reports linking his client to a move to Liverpool.

A true Liverpool legend!

During his playing career, Alonso played for Liverpool from 2004 to 2009, making 236 appearances and scoring 6 goals. The Spaniard was part of the famous Red squad that lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2005 in Istanbul, scoring the equaliser against AC Milan to make it 3-3.

After retiring, Alonso transitioned to the coaching profession and impressed in his first role at Real Sociedad B, tempting Bayer Leverkusen to make a move for the former midfielder.

After a Bundesliga-winning season at Leverkusen, Alonso quickly shot up the list of wanted managers, with clubs such as Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester City all linked.

Alonso eventually joined Madrid in the summer of 2025, but was sacked in January this year after a tough run of results.

As Liverpool are currently struggling under Arne Slot, Alonso has been linked with a summer move to Anfield.

Recently, Spanish news outlet Okdiario claimed that Alonso had agreed to take over from Slot at the end of the 25/26 season if the Dutchman does not win the Champions League.

However, Alonso’s agent, Ibanez, has now denied the above claims.

“All talk of an agreement with Liverpool is just media speculation.”

It has been claimed that Alonso is currently looking at all offers and will decide on his next move shortly.

Meanwhile, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano said: “At the moment, nothing has been done, agreed, in talks, or come a long way between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool. I can guarantee that nothing has been decided. At the end of the season, Liverpool will have an internal review involving players, managers and all people at the club.

“So there is going to be an internal conversation to evaluate the season, but at the moment nothing has been decided. Nothing has been agreed with Xabi Alonso. It’s an appreciation, of course, former Liverpool player, top coach, so just in case, feelings are positive between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool. But nothing at all has been agreed as of today.”
