The 28-year-old midfielder has impressed in Italy under the leadership of former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte.

McTominay had an outstanding debut season, scoring 13 goals and recording six assists across all competitions. Most memorably, he scored a volley on the final day of the season as Napoli beat Cagliari to win the league by just a one-point margin to Inter Milan.

McTominay’s performances and decisive goals earned him the award for Serie A’s Most Valuable Player. According to the latest reports from ESPN, Liverpool star Darwin Núñez could now be his teammate at Napoli.

McTominay and Núñez have history together, having faced each other in one of English football’s most intense rivalries.

Back in March 2023, Liverpool humiliated Manchester United with a 7-0 win at Anfield, where Núñez scored two goals. McTominay started on the bench, but came on for Brazilian midfielder Fred after an hour of play.

In this period, Liverpool scored four goals, including Núñez’s second.

After the game, Erik ten Hag said:
“We didn’t stick to the plan, we lost our heads. We didn’t do our job. We didn’t pay attention to the races, and it was really unprofessional.”

The Uruguayan striker joined Liverpool in 2022 for a club-record £85 million, although Florian Wirtz’s signing will surpass that amount.

Núñez has struggled to live up to expectations at Anfield.

Although he has 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 games, his lack of efficiency has caused frustration among fans and new head coach Arne Slot.

This season in the Premier League, he started in less than a quarter of the games, and Núñez is expected to leave the reigning champions this summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano wrote:
“Darwin Núñez remains guaranteed an exit from Liverpool this summer, with Saudi Pro League clubs interested since January. I also understand that Napoli have made contact in recent days, with Núñez on the shortlist and more talks are expected soon. Darwin is open to both Saudi Arabian and European options.”

At 25, he still has time to deliver on the promise he showed at Benfica.
