Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the permanent signing of Mathys Tel, who will be the first player under Thomas Frank’s management.

The 20-year-old first arrived in North London on the last day of the January transfer window and made 20 appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side in the second half of the season.

Mathys Tel only managed to score three goals and provide one assist in this period, but he still won a Europa League title and convinced the club of his potential.

One day after Tottenham were reportedly on the verge of making the transfer permanent, the club has confirmed that the French player has signed a six-year contract that lasts until the summer of 2031.

“We are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from FC Bayern,” it said in a statement. “Mathys joined the club from the Bundesliga side in February on loan until the end of the season with an option for a permanent transfer. We can confirm that we have reached an agreement with Bayern that will see the France U21 international sign a contract until 2031 when his loan deal expires on June 30.”

Final price for Tel clarified after permanent transfer

As Tottenham indicated in the statement, the club had an option to buy Tel, but it is understood that they have negotiated a lower price.

If Spurs had triggered this clause, they would have had to pay Bayern €55 million (£46.8 million), but the Europa League winners reportedly had the price reduced to a fixed sum of €35 million (£29.8 million).

However, Bayern could receive an additional €5 million (£4.3 million) in bonuses, and Tottenham already paid a €10 million (£8.5 million) loan fee to bring Tel to the Premier League in January.

In total, the transfer could reach €50 million (£42.6 million) if all bonuses are met, but Tottenham’s transfer manager deserves credit for negotiating the fixed sum by €20 million (£17 million).

Tel is in place: Who can Frank secure now?

Tel is Spurs’ first signing since Frank took over for Postecoglou and their second summer signing – Kevin Danso’s loan from Lens was made permanent for £21m earlier in June.

Now, however, Tottenham will focus on signing new players, and head coach Frank is said to be eager to reunite with Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo.

It is claimed that Spurs have received positive signals in their pursuit of the Cameroonian international, who is also wanted by Manchester United, and they have also reportedly had internal discussions about another Brentford striker.

A new centre-back could also be considered if Cristian Romero, who is linked with Atletico Madrid, leaves the club, but Tottenham already have a potential replacement ready in that position.
