There was no new round in the Premier League for Ange Postecoglou, nor a return as national team manager for Australia who face Egypt in the World Cup right now.

Now he gets the pleasure of being a well-paid babysitter for one of the world’s biggest football stars, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ange Postecoglou is back in the coaching profession, albeit in an era no one cares about – this time as boss of Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.

The former Celtic and Tottenham manager has signed a two-year contract with the Saudi Arabian club, where he will now work with Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Postecoglou takes over from Jorge Jesus, who led Al-Nassr to league glory last season – the club’s first domestic championship in seven years.

In a statement, Al-Nassr confirmed the appointment:

The move marks a quick return to the bench for Postecoglou, who has spent the summer as a TV commentator during the World Cup.

Trophies and difficult periods

Postecoglou comes to Saudi Arabia with a solid reputation built on success at several clubs – especially from his time at Celtic. The Australian won five trophies in two seasons in Glasgow, including a national treble, before leaving for Tottenham in the summer of 2023.

His first season in North London ended with a fifth place in the Premier League. Despite later success in the Europa League, he was still sacked after Spurs finished in a disappointing 17th place in the league.

A subsequent spell at Nottingham Forest was very short-lived – Postecoglou left the club after just 39 days, after a run of eight games without a win.

Despite these setbacks, Al-Nassr have opted to go for the 60-year-old in the hope of building on last year’s championship campaign.

New challenge in Saudi Arabia

Postecoglou’s arrival adds another high-profile name to the Saudi Pro League – and lays the groundwork for a reunion with several well-known figures. Among his rivals as manager is former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, who now leads Al-Qadsiah.

The appointment also puts an end to speculation that Postecoglou could be considered for other vacancies – including replacing Steve Clarke as Scotland’s national team manager.

Instead, he has chosen a new challenge in the Middle East, where expectations will be sky-high after Al-Nassr’s championship-winning season.
