Atlético Madrid are very close to making a big transfer with the signing of Morten Hjulmand. The captain of Sporting CP and Danish international has become an absolute priority for Diego Simeone.

The deal with the player is already well underway, and the contract will extend over five seasons – until June 2031. However, the transfer is not completely finalized, as the clubs have not yet agreed. Sporting know that Hjulmand is one of their most important assets and will not let him go without significant compensation. The transfer fee could be around 50 million euros.

Diego Simeone’s dream midfielder

Atlético’s interest in Hjulmand is not new, but the operation has now reached a crucial phase. The club has long been looking for a midfielder with the physicality, leadership and ability to carry the team in tough matches – and the Dane fits almost perfectly into Simeone’s wishes.

Hjulmand is an intense player, aggressive in duels and with the personality to lead from the middle. He is not only a defensive player, but has the vision to distribute the ball, organize the team and set the pace when needed. His role as captain of Sporting also speaks volumes about his character and influence in the dressing room.

For Atlético, this signing will mean more than just a new piece in midfield – it will give them a player who is intended as a regular starter from day one. Simeone wants a reliable, competitive midfielder who can take charge immediately.

€50 million – and optimism in Madrid

The main obstacle still lies in the negotiations with Sporting. The Lisbon club has no reason to sell Hjulmand cheaply, especially not after his development in recent seasons. The buyout clause is far higher, but Atlético believe they can reach a deal for around €50 million.

Player agreement is a key factor. Hjulmand wants to make the move to LaLiga and work under Simeone – something that could help Atlético in the final stages of negotiations. Nevertheless, Sporting will defend their interests to the end.

There is optimism at the Metropolitano – but also caution. Such operations can get bogged down in financial details, payment deadlines, or variables. But the will of all parties points to a positive outcome if Atlético meets the demands of the Portuguese.

A signing that shows ambition

Hjulmand’s arrival will show Atlético’s intentions. The Dane will not be a reserve – he is a player who will have a leading role in Simeone’s plans. His ability to provide balance, intensity and leadership in midfield makes him a signing of great sporting value.

Atlético wants to close the deal as quickly as possible. If an agreement with Sporting is reached, Hjulmand will sign until 2031 – and will be one of the club’s biggest investments in a project that needs muscle, character and authority in the middle.
