Gianni Infantino is on fire, but now the FIFA president is getting support from two completely unexpected quarters – in the middle of the biggest storm of criticism he has ever been in.
On Friday night, both Mexico and Argentina publicly issued strong statements of support for Infantino. This comes just days after UEFA cracked down boycott threats and a pronounced loss of confidence in the president’s leadership.
UEFA threatened with boycott – now Mexico and Argentina are responding
The European Football Union has been fierce: All 55 member associations will boycott FIFA tournaments – both for men and women – if plans to sell off the World Cup to private investors are not scrapped. In addition, they demand binding guarantees that similar proposals will never resurface.
CONCACAF, the association for North and Central America and the Caribbean, has also distanced itself from Infantino’s plans. But now one of their own members is breaking out in open support for the FIFA president.

Mexico, which recently hosted the World Cup, states that they are behind Infantino in the fight for re-election. Argentina quickly followed with their own move.
In a statement on the federation’s website, the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) writes:
“On behalf of AFA and our Board of Directors, we address you, Dear President – and through you to the FIFA Board of Directors – to express our full support for the work done over the past ten years.”
CONMEBOL opens door – but not for distrust
Shortly before the Argentine and Mexican moves, CONMEBOL – the South American confederation – came with a nuanced message: They will not support any vote of no confidence in Infantino, but at the same time open up for alternative candidates in the 2027 presidential election.
Africa’s football confederation, CAF, has already previously given its public support to Infantino – and the Africans are sitting heavily with many votes when the congress in Morocco in March 2027 will decide the future.

The battle for FIFA top is on
While UEFA and CONCACAF leaders are reportedly trying to rally support to bring down Infantino, last night’s move shows that the president still has heavy allies. The battle for power in the world’s football federation is in full swing – and no one knows who will be left when the dust has settled.
