While Aston Villa are fighting for qualification for the Champions League, there is serious talk about whether Manchester United will be relegated from the Premier League this season.
A few days ago, the temperature rose considerably after Jamie Carragher again slang with his lip.
Liverpool to persuade captain Virgil van Dijk to opt out of options
Jamie Carragher has provoked Aston Villa and their fans with his comments – But he gets away with an apology.
Aston Villa have dropped the threat of legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
The former Liverpool defender apologised on Saturday for using “clumsy and wrong” language when linking manager Unai Emery to the job as Manchester United manager.
On Friday, Villa had said they would initiate legal action against the former England defender for what they described as “unacceptable insults”.
The club’s statement, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, referred to comments Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast, in which he suggested that Emery would want to manage a “giant club”.
Now, however, Villa have ended any threat of legal action following Carragher’s apology.
With United manager Michael Carrick’s position uncertain while the club is in 17th place in the Premier League, Carragher said in Stick to Football: “He (Emery) would certainly want that opportunity to manage a giant again.
“There’s a chain in football, whether you like it or not.
“So Real Madrid are going to take Manchester United’s best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo. And there will be teams under Aston Villa and they are going to take the players or their manager.
“Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”
Carragher also told Aston Villa fans to shut up, in response to their criticism of him.
In a social media post on Saturday, Carragher said the comments were meant to be “joking”.
“I want to apologize to Aston Villa, the owners and the fans,” the pundit wrote.
“My language this week was clumsy and wrong.
“I can assure Villa fans that it was meant as a joke, but I understand that it has not been perceived that way, so I apologize.”
