John Murtough left Manchester United in 2024 to clear the way for the INEOS and Ratcliffe gang. Murtough had then been in the hallways at Old Trafford for eleven years in various positions, most recently as director of football. Now the Englishman will contribute his experience to lift Tom Brady’s Brimingham City project.
On Friday, the confirmation came that Birmingham City are hiring the former Manchester United director to their new director of football.

The Championship club reports that Murtough’s responsibilities will include football strategy, recruitment and squad building for Birmingham’s men’s team. He had been working as Atalanta’s director of global development, but the Italian club confirmed that they reached a mutual agreement to end his contract.
Murtough left Old Trafford in April 2024 after Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge of football operations to make way for the new management structure. United’s biggest signings during Murtough’s tenure as director of football include Antony (£86m), Jadon Sancho (£73m), Rasmus Hojlund (£72m) and Casemiro (£70m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£19.9m), Mason Mount (£60m) and Andre Onana (£47.2m).

Then some critics can say that these investments are not exactly something to brag about. In any case, we wish Murtough the best of luck in his new job.
Birmingham have got off to a strong start, just two points away from the top of the Championship after 11 games.
