Real Madrid forced to buy shooting star – to sell him on with giant tapas

When Nico Paz was sold to Italian side Como in the summer of 2024, he was an unknown 19-year-old without a single game for Real Madrid’s first team. The price was modest – only 6 million euros – but the Madrilenians made sure to write in a buy-back clause. It turned out to be worth its weight in gold.

€7 million becomes at least €60 million

Because under Cesc Fàbregas’ leadership, Como has undergone a formidable development. The club has gone from being a newly promoted underdog in Serie A to a team that plays with identity, courage and technical class – and right at the centre of this is Nico Paz.

The 21-year-old playmaker has become the heart of the Como machinery, and the numbers speak for themselves. No midfielder in Serie A had more goals without penalties, assists or shots on target than Paz per 90 minutes last season. He was also in the top ten for dribbling, breakthroughs, expected assists and duels won.

Transfermarkt, who are often conservative in their valuations, now estimate his worth at €80 million – and it could rise further if he is given a central role in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

Real Madrid’s plan: Buy – and sell expensive

Now the Spanish giant club is striking. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid are meeting with Como today to inform the Italians that they are activating the buy-back option. Price: 7 million euros. A fraction of the current market value.

But even if Real Madrid are looking for new midfielders, that does not mean that Nico Paz will get a place in José Mourinho’s team. On the contrary – the plan is as simple as it is ingenious: buy back for 7 million, sell on for 60-80 million.

Real Madrid will first offer Como to buy him for €60 million. If they turn it down, Inter Milan are already heavily linked with the Argentine, and several Premier League clubs have shown interest.

Paz has a contract with Real Madrid, and thus the Madrilenians are in full control.

From periphery to World Cup star

In just two seasons at Como, the young Argentine has delivered 19 goals and 17 assists in 75 appearances. Now he is in the World Cup with Argentina – and his time in Italy could soon be history.

For Como, this is about a loss of one of Serie A’s greatest talents. But at the same time, the club under Fàbregas has shown that they can develop players into world-class players – and that has a value in itself.

In short: A simple plan. Purchases for 7 million euros. Sell for 60 million euros. Como can be proud to have created a world star, and Real Madrid can cash in.

The next match for Argentina in the World Cup is on Sunday against Jordan. There we will see if Paz’s value continues to rise.
