The Argentine is not part of Xabi Alonso’s plans – and is now chasing a new club that truly believes in him.
Alejandro Garnacho has become one of the names to follow in the final days of the transfer window. The Argentine winger does not have a guaranteed place at Chelsea, and the sports office is considering a sale after an uneven first season.

The arrival of Xabi Alonso on the coaching bench has opened a new chapter at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard is going through a very large squad – and according to reports from Italy and England, the winger is not considered indispensable in the build-up of the new project.
Alejandro Garnacho is no longer a priority for Xabi Alonso
Garnacho’s future could be clarified over the weekend or early next week. An internal meeting is scheduled to determine if he starts pre-season with the option to stay – or if he gets permission to find a new club.
The Argentine turned 22 on July 1 and has a contract until June 2032. The London club invested over €45 million to sign him from Manchester United in August 2025 – and therefore don’t want to lose too much on the sale.
His performances also didn’t live up to the expectations that came with the transfer. The winger played 43 official games, scoring eight goals and providing four assists – but in the Premier League he scored just once and gradually lost importance as the season progressed.
In London, you still value his speed, creativity and ability to attack space from the left wing. The problem is that Xabi Alonso has more attacking options – and wants to reduce the competition which in turn could limit his playing time.
AS Roma is waiting in the wings
AS Roma has been one of the first clubs to inquire about the terms of a possible deal. The Italian club wants to strengthen the wings – and believes Garnacho combines young age, international experience and potential to regain his best level.
The first approach was to explore a loan – a solution that would limit Rome’s financial risk. But Chelsea currently prefer a permanent sale to recoup a significant portion of the investment from last summer.
However, the disagreement does not mean that the negotiations have been concluded. Italian sources claim that alternative structures can be analysed – such as loans with an option to buy or an obligation to buy linked to sporting goals, if the figures are acceptable to all parties.
Roma can also offer him a bigger role and a tactical setting that suits him. The Argentine needs continuity to become decisive again – while the Italians are looking for a vertical winger who can change games with accelerations and runs into the box.
An exit to regain the spotlight
Leaving the Premier League would be a big transfer after several seasons in England – but it could also revitalise a career that lost momentum over the past season. In Serie A, he will have the opportunity to take more responsibility – and distance himself from the pressure of an expensive transfer.
Other clubs are also following suit – but Roma have a head start because they have acted early. The scheduled meeting will be crucial in determining the price tag, the conditions – and the player’s own willingness to feel important again.
Everything points to a separation – but the final approval from Xabi Alonso and Chelsea’s management remains. If the door is officially opened, Alejandro Garnacho could become one of the market’s great opportunities for Italian football.
Manchester United are back – serious about Julian Ryerson!
