Howe gives clear signal to Man Utd – ready to replace Carrick
Manchester United continue to hold Eddie Howe in high regard. The former Newcastle boss has made it clear that he is ready for a new top job – and the understanding is that he will be high on INEOS’ list if management decide to leave Michael Carrick, TEAMtalk has learned.
Howe, 48, has been without a club since leaving St James’ Park this summer after almost five years as Newcastle manager.
Joan Laporta’s plan to convince Erling Haaland
During his time on Tyneside, he transformed the Magpies from relegation contender to Champions League contender and lifted the Carabao Cup in 2025. This work, combined with his previous success at Bournemouth, has left a lasting impression at Old Trafford.
We have reported that United have no immediate plans to part ways with current manager Michael Carrick, who was given the permanent role earlier this year. That is still the firm stance from Old Trafford.
A disappointing start to the season – with only two wins in 10 games – has nevertheless led to internal discussions about possible contingency options.
Highly ranked among the candidates
Howe is considered to be very highly rated among those being considered, given his experience in the Premier League and Europe – and his reputation as a measured, progressive coach.
The fact that he is a British manager also appeals to the INEOS bosses. United wanted him already while he was at Newcastle, but he was very difficult to get out of that job.
Should the situation with Carrick prove untenable – and it is worth emphasising that we are not at that stage yet – Howe will be an obvious and immediate candidate, given that he is available on the market.
Has declined – but is now ready
Howe has already turned down several inquiries since leaving Newcastle, including from French club Lens, which we exclusively revealed.
Although he had prioritised a period of rest and family time, those close to the situation say that he is “now ready to return to management” – provided that the project is the right one.
He has used his time away from the game to learn and improve as a coach. The United job would be hard for him to ignore if the opportunity arises.
Howe’s availability and track record make him an attractive candidate at a time when United’s management wants to avoid another prolonged period of instability.
While he won’t say so publicly, we understand that Howe is now fully ready to get back into action – and is keeping an open mind for the next big opportunity.
