Ederson has finally spoken out about the failed Manchester United transfer drama – and admits that he still doesn’t understand why the deal foundered.

The Brazilian midfielder was all but ready for United in June. The Reds had signed a deal with Atalanta, and everything indicated that Ederson would be the club’s first signing this summer.

Then United withdrew. Medical concerns were cited as the reason – but Ederson himself has never been given an explanation.

“The tests went well”

Now, ahead of Atalanta’s Conference League playoff match against Hapoel Tel-Aviv, the 25-year-old breaks the silence:

“I honestly don’t know what happened. I’ve always had interest from other clubs and I could have gone to another English team,” Ederson said.

“The tests went well. I don’t know what changed. I’ve been at Atalanta for four years and have always played.

Chose to stay – and signed a new contract

After Manchester United withdrew, Ederson was faced with a choice: wait and see, or commit to Atalanta. He chose the latter.

“I could have just waited and seen what happened, but the good relationship with the club convinced me to stay and sign a new contract,” he explains.

“I had beautiful moments when I went to the World Cup with Brazil, and then… I still don’t know what happened, to be honest.

“I’m still Ederson

Despite the transfer blow, he has moved on:

“The important thing is that I managed to handle the situation, come back with the right mentality and give everything to the club that gave me so much.

“I’m still Ederson. Everyone knows me here and what I can do. They know that I will always give it my all.

United have progressed

Manchester United have since strengthened their midfield significantly. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have been brought in, as well as Carlos Baleba from Brighton.

Ederson is history for United – but the story of why the transfer collapsed remains unanswered. Both for himself – and for the rest of us.
