Norway needs at least two top goalkeepers who push each other, while at the same time being a backup for each other. In the Nations League, the Norwegian media has been embarrassed to write off Ørjan Nyland, but what is happening this autumn suggests that the first-choice goalkeeper discussion on the Norwegian national team will be less interesting. We are about to have two strong candidates fighting for the place.

Ørjan Nyland was left with more than 150 days without a club game, when the opportunity presented itself at RB Leipzig. At the end of last month, Leipzig coach Martin Demichelis gave Nyland the chance from the start in the Bundesliga match against SV Elversberg. Nyland has trained well and deserved the opportunity – which he took very good care of. RB Leipzig hammered in four goals and Nyland kept a clean sheet. This with a great save before half-time and close to an assist after a long kick against Tidiam Gomis.

Three days later, Nyland was also involved in RB Leipzig’s cup win against RW Essen to a 1-2 win with Antonio Nusa as Player of the Match.

And Egil Selvik? At Brest, the 29-year-old is a given in the starting eleven. In mid-October, he was named the best on the pitch against Lille in Ligue 1, on Monday it was Lorient who got to know the Norwegian national team goalkeeper. They were chasing their fourth straight win, but this evening the Brest cage was closed. Completely closed.

Because in his tenth game as a Brest skipper, Selvik walked off the field with a 0-2 win and his first clean sheet, without a backwards.

Selvik was of course very pleased with his first “donut” in Ligue 1.

“It’s fantastic, it’s a good start. Have to give credit to the defense and, they were fantastic,” Selvik said after the game.

Norway has little reason to worry about the last line of defense going forward.
