One story after another has emerged about Erik ten Hag’s time as Manchester United manager. This week, two years later, the Dutchman’s own version is released. At least he should not claim that he was behind it, when the club “gave away” Scott McTominay to Napoli.
McTominay is the player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described as a huge mistake for Manchester United to sell. In an interview in 2025 with The Athletic, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out McTominay. Both because of the success, but also the mistake United made by squeezing out such an important player for the United squad.

“Scotty (Scott McTominay) is doing well at Napoli. I’m sad that we let him go, because he was important last season, when he scored more goals. His heart and his knowledge of the culture was important,” Solskjaer told the English media.
Now Erik ten Hag talks about the summer when McTominay was sold to Napoli – against the coach’s will.
“In Ibiza we agreed. I said: ‘No sale of Scott McTominay’. We would have gone ally in the transfer window. I give an argument, a reason: we don’t have scoring ability. Scott brings scoring ability and a good mentality. He has United in all his veins,” Ten Hag begins to The Athletic.

“So when they brought up the subject, they said ‘no’. And in the end, they sold him. Of course, I was very embarrassed and disappointed,” Ten Hag said of the mistake.
