The Georgian goalkeeper, brought in from Valencia, has not quite had the opportunity to convince enough to take the first goalkeeper spot and may leave Anfield.

26-year-old Giorgi Mamardashvili could be looking towards the exit sign at the end of the season if Alisson Becker continues as the first goalkeeper and extends his time at Anfield. The Georgian has a contract until 2031, but this season he has only played one official game while the Brazilian is holding on to the goal in the Premier League.

The scenario is far from the plan laid out when Liverpool agreed to sign him from Valencia in 2024 for around €35 million including variables. Mamardashvili remained on loan at Mestalla for one more season before joining the English club permanently.

Giorgi Mamardashvili is still blocked by Alisson

Giorgi Mamardashvili’s first season in England was already marked by the competition with Alisson. The Georgian ended up playing 21 games, many of them during periods where the Brazilian was injured.

The situation has come to a head with Andoni Iraola. Alisson has retained the top position at the start of the season, and Mamardashvili has only played in the Carabao Cup match against Tottenham, which Liverpool won 3-1 on September 15.

Iraola has clearly defined the hierarchy in goal. The coach considers the Brazilian his first choice, but has also expressed public confidence in Mamardashvili. However, this assessment has not yet led to regular opportunities in the Premier League.

According to Calciomercato, Alisson’s continuation could decide the next move. Liverpool exercised an option to extend his contract until June 2027 after Juventus considered signing him in the summer. There is currently no agreement to extend that bond further. Already this summer, the first rumours were heard that Mamardashvili wanted a change of scenery.

Liverpool must decide the future of Giorgi Mamardashvili

Giorgi Mamardashvili has a contract until 2031, so the English club is not under pressure to sell him. According to available information, he receives around £4,4 million per season and is valued at around €30 million.

His name has already appeared on the Italian market. Juventus considered him this summer as an option if they failed to sign Alisson, while Inter Milan have previously followed his situation.

This context could become significant if the distribution of playing time does not change in the coming months. A loan or transfer will allow Mamardashvili to seek regularity without waiting endlessly for the originally expected shift in the Anfield goal.

Alisson has the final say

The decision will also depend on Alisson’s future. The Brazilian turns 34 in October and his contract expires in 2027, but he remains one of the team’s sporting references, and Iraola included him among the vice-captains for this season.

Therefore, next summer will be the turning point for Giorgi Mamardashvili. If Alisson continues as the first goalkeeper and agrees a new contract, the Georgian could consider options outside of Liverpool. If the Brazilian leaves in 2027, the opportunity finally opens up to take over the goal in the Premier League – what he was actually brought in for.
