Today’s game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was supposed to lift the mood among Tottenham supporters, but after Newcastle’s second goal, many took the evening and went home.

Matthias Jaissle is still unbeaten as Newcastle boss – while Tottenham are still waiting for their first league goal.

Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored in the second half as Newcastle United secured their first Premier League win under Matthias Jaissle with a 2-0 away win to Tottenham.

Newcastle have had a very promising start under new manager Jaissle – despite three key players leaving the club this summer: former captain Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

Jaissle’s men conceded a last-minute penalty against Liverpool in the league opener to make it 2-2, before beating West Brom 3-2 in the midweek EFL Cup.

But the victory in north London tasted extra good – Newcastle got the better of former teammate Tonali, who left them for Tottenham in a transfer worth £100 million.

Spurs, who lost 3-0 to Brentford in their opening game before winning 5-1 over Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup, gave their debut to new signing Omar Marmoush after his move from Manchester City. Winger Savio – also new from the Etihad – had to sit out with injury.

But it was another former City player who stole the show. Newcastle midfielder Nico Gonzalez marked his debut with a key role when his lovely pass was the icing on the cake for Anthony Elanga’s opening goal in the 62nd minute.

Ten minutes later, Yoane Wissa doubled the lead with an instinctive finish – thus securing Jaissle’s unbeaten start. Meanwhile, Tottenham are still without a point and without a goal after two games – despite a summer of big deals.

Newcastle on track under Jaissle

Newcastle started the game promisingly, and Elanga came close to scoring with a raised shot across goal after a superb pass from Amar Dedic – who in turn headed on from Gonzalez’s pass. This would prove to be a harbinger of what was to come in the second half.

The Magpies had a lot of possession, but Spurs grew into the game and created the most chances in the first half – and Newcastle had to thank goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek time and time again for good saves.

Hornicek flew through the air to fend off a curling shot from Mathys Tel, before Pedro Porro had his shot from close range blocked by Lewis Hall.

Porro then hammered a volley just over the crossbar from the edge of the box, before Hornicek saved Andy Robertson’s shot at the near post – and then stopped Jan Paul van Hecke from the ensuing corner.

Newcastle opened the second half offensively, with Hall firing a long-range shot across goal. Marmoush – who has scored seven goals against the Magpies in his career – responded with a cautionary shot at the other end, but the shot went wide.

But Newcastle’s newest signing would really make their mark on the game. Gonzalez’s superb pass across the pitch was headed on by Dedic to Elanga – who with an infallible finish in turn sent the ball into the post and into the goal.

Porro tried to respond with a shot that was blocked across target, but Newcastle took full control as Wissa showed outstanding improvisation. He met substitute Nick Woltemade’s header from a corner with an acrobatic turn and finish from close range – and was held onside by former teammate Tonali as he doubled the lead.

Tonali was later taken off the pitch – much to the delight of Newcastle fans – while Spurs brought in several attacking players in the hope of a turnaround. Despite Marmoush and Dominic Solanke coming close to scoring late in the game, the equaliser failed to materialise.
