With Germany the expected group leader in Group E, this opening match could be crucial to the battle for the play-off places.
Ivory Coast comes to the United States after four straight wins. Emerse Fæ’s team is aiming to reach the playoffs for the first time in its history – after previous group stage exits in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
Ecuador, on the other hand, has quietly become one of the most difficult teams to beat in international football. Since Sebastian Beccacece took over after a loss to Brazil two years ago, La Tri have gone a whopping 19 games unbeaten in all competitions.
Ivory Coast vs Ecuador team news
The Ivory Coast will probably have to do without Roma defender Evan Ndicka, who has been out with a high thigh since this month’s Roma derby. He still has big doubts about the Group E opening.
The Fae has several attack options available. Amad Diallo, Simon Adingra, Nicolas Pépé and highly-rated winger Yan Diomande are all vying for starting spots. Since Sébastien Haller was dropped from the squad, it is Elye Wahi, Evann Guessand and Ange-Yoan Bonny who are fighting to take the lead.
Ecuador’s biggest injury concern is captain Enner Valencia. The experienced striker is considered a small doubt, but is expected to get every opportunity to prove that he is ready before kick-off.
Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo will be central to Ecuador’s plans, while Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié, PSG stopper Willian Pacho and teenage star Kendry Páez bring quality throughout the backbone of the team.

Ivory Coast vs. Ecuador prediction prediction
Ecuador’s defensive range makes them very difficult opponents, but Ivory Coast has enough attacking quality to create chances – even against the most organised back rows.
The South Americans rarely lose and usually keep the games close, while the Ivory Coast have enough talent on the wings to threaten throughout the match. With advancement likely to be decided in the next two group games, a cautious and even draw seems like the most likely outcome.
