Antonio Conte is lurking in the wings. The Italian fox is generally talking about his next managerial job, but to us it sounds like it’s specifically about Manchester United. Jaap Stam has previously offered to return to Man Utd to help out as a coach, but no one has so far called the former United star. For Stam, there is one coach United now need – for more of the same.
“Back in the day, when Sir Alex was in charge of the squads, I think they still had a bit more time to work on a team, build a team, and ultimately achieve success. Nowadays, it’s very difficult for a manager to make that time successful in the long term,” Stam tells Flashscore.

-As you mentioned, they have had previous managers with a lot of experience, like Mourinho, Moyes, Van Gaal, Ten Hag. They all had experience at a high level, and they were not successful. So it’s not a given that when you bring in a manager with a lot of experience, he will have the ideas or the answer to succeed, Stam continues (we notice that he overlooks Solskjaer, the best United manager since Ferguson).
For Stam, Carrick is still the right man for the job.
“I think Michael is still the right man to do it. You have to have a guy who is close to the players. He knows the players, he knows the culture of the club, he has a good understanding with the people on the board, and they give him confidence and time so he can sort things out. Of course, he has to have a plan for how to do it, but they probably discussed it, and how to approach the transfer periods as well, when they are going to bring in certain players, and then build on that.”
“It’s always a guess if you bring in a particular manager, if he will do the job for you, but Michael proved last season that he can do it, and I’m sure he will grow and achieve better results during this season,” Stam concluded.
