The Colombian star leaves the league without leaving a lasting mark. “It’s extra sad that a player with James Rodríguez’s history doesn’t succeed in MLS, which isn’t even a top 20 league. Even the Swedish Allsvenskan holds a higher level in my opinion.
Colombian midfielder James Rodríguez played his last official MLS game in the Minnesota United shirt. After it was confirmed that he will not continue at the club next season, all eyes were on Allianz Field to see the farewell to one of Colombia’s greatest of all time. With this match, James ends his stay in American football, right after his participation in the 2026 World Cup. His time in Minnesota had mixed impressions: he showed glimpses of the elite class that once took him to Europe’s biggest clubs, but he never quite managed to anchor a stable project for the club in Saint Paul.
James Rodríguez close to scoring in the farewell
In just over an hour on the pitch, James Rodríguez once again took on the role of offensive playmaker. He constantly tried to connect with the strikers and create danger in the final third of the pitch.
The Colombian was inches away from a farewell goal when one of his shots hit the post – one of the game’s biggest chances. The road so far for James Rodríguez
James Rodríguez was born in Cúcuta in 1991 and started his career at Envigado before making the move to Porto in 2010. It was in Portugal that he really flourished, and after fantastic performances in both league and Europe, he went to Monaco in 2013. But it was during the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 that he really took the world by storm. With six goals in five games, including the iconic volley against Uruguay, he won the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer. The transfer to Real Madrid came immediately afterwards.
At Los Blancos, it was a mixed experience. He had brilliant periods, especially under Carlo Ancelotti, but struggled to find a permanent place under later coaches. After a successful loan spell at Bayern Munich (2017–2019), he returned to Real Madrid, before moving on to Everton in 2020 to reunite with Ancelotti.
This was followed by stints in Al-Rayyan (Qatar), Olympiacos (Greece) and São Paulo (Brazil), before surprising many in 2025 by signing for Minnesota United in MLS. Expectations were high, but his career in the United States was marked by injuries and a lack of continuity. He showed flashes of magic, but never managed to dominate as many hoped.
The future of James Rodríguez after Minnesota United
The official farewell opens a new chapter in the international market. The Colombian becomes one of the most attractive free agents available, especially for clubs seeking experience, leadership and a global stardom.
At 35, the former Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Everton star continues to attract interest from several leagues. Fans around the world are now eagerly awaiting what the next step in his career will be, after his MLS adventure.
