Spain’s national team coach has stated this week that he would have liked to see Wirtz with a Spanish passport, the 23-year-old is “fantastic”. On Thursday, Jürgen Klopp gave the young German the captain’s armband for Germany in the second half against Serbia. A quarter of an hour later, Wirtz scored 2-0. Liverpool supporters are still waiting for the final breakthrough for last summer’s £116 million investment, now champion Klopp is giving tips on how Wirtz can succeed in the Premier League and at Liverpool.

Wirtz was in the lead role after Germany’s victory in the Nations League, after the game the 23-year-old spoke about the match – and about talks with Klopp.

“Of course, the opponent (Serbia) gave us more space because they were a bit more disorganized, and maybe they were looking for one or two more counter-attacks, and then more space opened up, and we took advantage of it well. I think the interaction all the way from the defense all the way to the striker was very good, because everyone wanted the ball, and that’s why each player was able to show what they can do today,” Wirtz said.

When asked if Klopp had done anything special to get him back in the mood, Wirtz shared that the 59-year-old had asked him to play as himself again, but kept some further advice to himself.

“Of course he wants me to play the kind of football again that people are used to from me and we definitely had one or two conversations. He gave me a couple of things that I will definitely take with me and try to implement.

On what he needs to play as this week, Wirtz gave an ironic answer: -Ideally, a lot of space in every game, so I can do what I want!.
