Liverpool are once again in the top four of the Premier League table and are fighting for Champions League qualification. More surprisingly, before this weekend’s 9th round Tottenham are no longer at the bottom of the table and have swapped places at Manchester United, who now occupy 17th place.

Tottenham, along with Real Madrid, have been looking at the possibility of an Alexis Mac Allister transfer. He was not so long ago a loose card at Anfield.

Liverpool are sure to give Alexis Mac Allister a new contract considering his recent performances. That’s what experienced former Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa scout Bryan King says in an exclusive interview with Football Insider.

The 27-year-old’s current deal expires in 2028 and the Reds are rumoured to have no plans to give him a new contract.

Mac Allister spoke publicly about the decision in September, expressing disappointment after teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch had been given new deals.

Should Liverpool’s stance not change, they will certainly have to consider a sale next summer if they are to make a return on the deal worth up to £55m that they struck with Brighton in 2023 for the Argentine.

Mac Allister has been a key piece in Andoni Iraola’s team so far this season, and has been in great form with four goals in 12 games in all competitions.

“No danger” of Alexis Mac Allister disappearing

It’s been several years since Liverpool had good depth in midfield, and signings further up the pitch seemed to be a priority.

However, the emergence of Trey Nyoni this season has finally created competition in the centre of the pitch, which Iraola’s team has benefited greatly from.

A sale of Mac Allister would be a particularly strange decision, because it would change just that.

“He’s played every game. They’ll get a deal, don’t worry about it. There’s no danger there,” King told Football Insider.

“He’s got that tough midfielder mentality. He’s going in to win the ball. He’s scored a couple of goals this season.

“I wouldn’t hesitate. I would definitely give him another two-year contract. He’s played every game. If playing every game isn’t enough to think ‘well, let’s take a chance’…

“Let’s give him one year with a one-year option, even.” He wants to play for the football club, so that’s always a plus. He’s a good player. He’s a world champion. I just think it’s a no-brainer.

Andoni Iraola eager to keep Mac Allister

Mac Allister has been a key piece in Iraola’s team so far this season, and the Spaniard seems equally puzzled as to why he could be leaving.

“For me, it’s impossible [to say what happened last season] because I wasn’t here last season,” the manager said last week when asked about the improvement in form. “So we’re talking about hypotheses. And he definitely knows it better than me, right?

“What I can say about him is that I’m happy, because his performances have been very good from the first day I arrived. He arrived [as] the last one from the national team, but immediately took everything, all the information.

“I think he’s smart, understands, you don’t have to explain the same things seven times to Alexis. Some of the players take things very quickly, get information even from the opponent, what we need from each team, from each position.

“And I think he also helps his teammates a lot, because he understands the big picture, and it’s good to have him on the field.
