John Arne Riise and Dirk Kuyt thundered on in the Liverpool shirt, after the end of their careers and with the transition to their coaching careers, there has been less “thundering”. Riise is doing his stuff, Kuyt is struggling to keep his jobs. Now the Dutchman is back, this time as an assistant.

Three days before New Year 2023, Kuyt was hired as the new head coach of the club with the somewhat peculiar name Beerschot. Short-term contract for the rest of the season, Kuyt took on the task halfway through the start of the season. The Belgian second division club had been struggling, but with Kuyt at the helm, things turned around – promotion to the top league in Belgium! The season in the top division was not a success with direct relegation. The Beerschot management blamed Kuyt, after the end of the 2025 season came the message that the club did not extend the contract of the Liverpool legend.

Seven days later, Kuyt was offered a contract with Dutch side FC Dordrecht. Now the Liverpool legend is taking one step back to the assistant coaching role, but still one step forward. On Wednesday, the 45-year-old will be clapped in as first team coach at Süper Lig club Fenerbahce.

Dordrecht director Hans de Zeeuw has previously confirmed to Voetbal International that the club will receive a very, very good financial compensation for releasing Dirk Kuyt. It is part of the story that the player Kuyt went directly from Liverpool in 2012 to three years at Fenerbahce.
