Liverpool appear to have a lot of work to do in the two 2027 transfer windows, with new sporting director Julian Ward in place to work alongside manager Andoni Iraola to determine their goals.
Liverpool made some key additions to new manager Iraola during the last summer transfer window, including Bradley Barcola and Ronald Araújo, while Jérémy Jacquet officially moved to Anfield after a deal was struck in January.
Scott McTominay could return to the Premier League – has started talks with Manchester United
It feels like there could be a bigger cleanup coming in 2027, as the Reds prepare to officially start a new era outside of some of the players who have been so important to them in recent seasons.
Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah already left the club in the summer, and there are doubts about the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Alexis Mac Allister, with the former two’s contracts expiring next summer.
There has yet to be any breakthrough or confirmation that the Merseyside club want to keep the experienced duo, so we are awaiting developments.
Meanwhile, Mac Allister has just over 18 months left on his contract at Anfield and has already publicly confirmed that the club has told him they were unable to offer him new terms – although fellow midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai both signed new long-term deals in 2026.
If that’s the case, 2027 will be the last chance for Liverpool to make good money for the Argentine international. If all three players end up leaving the club, they will need to be adequately replaced, given how crucial they have been to their success.
Liverpool contracts expiring in 2027:
- Virgil van Dijk
- Alisson
- Wataru Endo
- Joe Gomez
- Kostas Tsimikas
The Reds are yet to sign a specialist replacement for Salah on the right, and the jury is still out on full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
An interesting position is the number 10 role, where they spent £116 million to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
The Germany international has yet to truly live up to the price tag and, according to reports in Mexico, they could already be lining up an alternative to the 23-year-old – amid a claim by local journalist David Faitelson that they have made a £37 million bid for Club Tijuana teenager Gilberto Mora.
Gilberto Mora is the perfect player for Andoni Iraola’s system
Mora won’t turn 18 until next week, but he has already made over 60 first-team appearances for Club Tijuana, while he has 13 caps for Mexico and started three of their five games at the 2026 World Cup.
His talent and potential are there for all to see, and it’s no surprise that some of the biggest clubs in European football are eyeing the North American phenomenon.
Mora’s record for Club Tijuana:
| Matches | Starter | Minutes | Objectives | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 62 | 39 | 3 740 | 15 | 3 |
A record of 15 goals in 39 starts for someone who has not yet turned 18 is remarkable – and there is no doubt that in his home country he is regarded as a generational talent.
If Liverpool managed to complete a deal to bring him to Europe, it would be seen as a huge achievement, and he has some qualities that make him the ideal player for an Iraola system.
We’ve already seen the Spaniard tell his attacking players to be versatile, as they’re likely to feature all over the front line – and Mora fits perfectly into that category.
Although he has mostly played as number 10 for his club, he has also played from the left and even as a centre-forward on occasions, which shows his flexibility in an attacking line.
England manager Thomas Tuchel was asked about the prodigy before the Three Lions’ World Cup knockout match against Mexico this summer, and he made his feelings clear about the player.
“We’re not surprised, we’ve seen his quality. It’s very impressive, he’s a very young and talented player. He doesn’t get nervous on the biggest stage. He’s a top player.”
Tuchel’s point that he seems so confident is such an important point, because it should indicate that he will not be intimidated by playing in a stadium like Anfield.
Of course, the young player has played at Azteca, so he knows what it’s like to play in great atmospheres – but it would help him if he ended up making the switch to England.
Pedro Rodríguez! – A legend says goodbye
