In recent months, Nico Schlotterbeck has been one of the most talked about players on the rumor mill. It took a long time with a contract extension with Dortmund, then it was supposed to be in place, but the centre-back denied this last month. Liverpool and other big clubs had glued themselves to the process, where the opportunity to sign one of the market’s best centre-backs was open. Last week came the confirmation that Dortmund secured an extension until 2031, but Liverpool are still not hooked off.

Liverpool will build up a long-term centre-back pairing, where Schlotterbeck has been singled out as one of the strongest candidates to fill one of the roles, according to several English media. When the contract extension came, it was a real letdown for the Liverpool management, but now it turns out that Schlotterbeck has got himself an open door to Anfield.

Because according to Bild , the German international has a buyout clause in his contract of 50-60 million euros that applies to his three “dream clubs”. One is Liverpool, the other Real Madrid, the third unnamed.

The buyout clause will be active until mid-July – around the time of the World Cup final on 19 July.

It was clear Dortmund boss Hans-Joachim Watzke was not happy with the deal, but was the best Dortmund could negotiate.

“I would say that it is a good compromise. For us, it’s about securing a certain transfer value, while of course also giving ourselves some time to plan,” the Dortmund president told Ruhr Nachrichten.
