Liverpool only sold him in 2025 – and could already reverse the decision in January, but it won’t be easy because what he has delivered in France has attracted interest from almost all of the Reds’ competitors.
Liverpool are among several clubs interested in signing midfielder Tyler Morton, one year after the Englishman left Anfield.

Morton joined Ligue 1 club Lyon for £15 million after spending 16 years on Merseyside, where he progressed through the academy before making his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup match against Norwich City in September 2021.
The 23-year-old then made 14 appearances for Liverpool, while spending two seasons on loan in the Championship – first for Blackburn Rovers in 2022/23, then under Liam Rosenior at Hull City in 2023/24.

Morton’s departure was approved by Arne Slot after he was not guaranteed a place in the Dutchman’s first-team plans last season. Slot instead preferred players such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch in central midfield.
In an interview with SPORTbible in October 2025, the Englishman said of Slot: “I think he thought I was a good player, but I didn’t feel the confidence was as high.
“In my opinion, the limited opportunities were due to trust, not ability.
“When I got the chance in the cup, I felt like I played well. That’s all I could say. I persevered, stayed focused, got through to the end of the season and played in the U21 European Championship, which was fantastic.”
But it seems that the two-time Premier League champions are already regretting the decision, as Morton has become one of Europe’s top midfielders in France, where he has made 53 appearances in all competitions and contributed six goals.
There has even been talk that Morton could break into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad after establishing himself at the heart of Paulo Fonseca’s plans at Lyon.
Unsurprisingly, the versatile midfielder has attracted the attention of seven Premier League clubs – according to TEAMtalk – with Liverpool joining Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Newcastle, Sunderland and Everton in the race for his signature.
Morton’s “ability to operate centrally in midfield” and his “growing experience at the highest level” are said to have made him an attractive option for clubs looking for a player who can make an immediate difference.
The report adds that Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola is an “admirer” of the former England Under-21 international – perhaps giving the Reds an opportunity to reverse the mistake of selling the talented midfielder prematurely.

Tyler Morton’s parting words point to a future Liverpool return
As a lifelong Liverpool supporter, it was undoubtedly emotional for Morton when he left Anfield last year, and this is reflected in his farewell message to the supporters.
“When you spend 17 years at a club, the fans, players and staff feel like family to you. It’s more than just football,” Morton wrote on social media in August 2025.
“I could sit here all day and talk about the memories I had during my time at Liverpool, but I just want to express how grateful I am to this club!
“The people around this club have taught me so much and completely shaped me into the person I am today.
“First of all, to the staff, the players and all the teammates I’ve worked with: you are people I will remember for life. In my hardest moments, you were always there for me, and in my best moments, you never changed.
“To the staff: I am eternally grateful for the opportunity you have all given me to play for this club. From the age of five until now, everyone I have met has guided me and allowed me to become the player I am today – and the work they put in behind the scenes at all ages should never go unnoticed.
“Finally, to the Liverpool fans: thank you for always taking care of me and my family. Whether I was on loan or at the club, I always felt loved and part of this incredible football club.
“You supported me through everything, and I hope you know that I gave everything for you – because that’s the least you deserve!
“A lot has changed in 17 years, but one thing will never change: my love for the club. I will always be a Liverpool supporter.

Having established himself as a top-class midfielder in one of Europe’s five biggest leagues, Morton will surely be open to a return to Anfield.
