Xabi Alonso was the first choice as Jürgen Klopp’s replacement, but the Spaniard chose to continue his success at Bayer Leverkusen. Arne Slot ended up getting the job, a Premier League title and a weak second season later, the Dutchman has been fired. Alonso chose Chelsea in mid-May, two weeks before Slot is sent to the gate. Would the situation have been different, with Alonso as the new Liverpool manager, if the decision on Slot had come before the end of the season? The answer is no. Now it is steered towards signing the chosen one.

The Athletic claim that as early as back in March, it was already confirmed that Liverpool would NOT bring in Alonso if Slot was sacked.

Journalist Kay recalls: “It was clearly told to me in March that if they were looking for a new coach (which was not their intention at the time), it would not be Alonso.”

“If they had wanted to, [Liverpool] could very easily have spoken to him before he took the Chelsea job.” (After all, he has the same agent as Iraola.) They didn’t.”

Teamtalk “insider”, Graeme Bailey, claims Iraola has agreed to join Liverpool. The Spaniard has rejected interest from Crystal Palace, Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan to take the Anfield job. Talks are now progressing, and Liverpool hope to officially hire the 43-year-old as soon as possible. According to The Guardian, Liverpool aim to announce Iraola as the new Liverpool coach before the World Cup starts on June 11.
