Napoli just secured a place in the Champions League next season, and that triggered the mandatory purchase clause for Rasmus Hojlund – the Dane who is on loan from Manchester United. Now it’s official: Højlund will stay in Naples permanently until the summer. The deal is worth €44 million, and is triggered by the Italian big club securing a place in the 2026/27 Champions League.
The loan deal, which cost United €6 million, contained one condition: If Antonio Conte’s team qualified for Europe’s premier club competition, the Neapolitans would have to buy him. They reached that goal this Sunday. Second-placed Napoli, who are second in Serie A, thrashed Pisa 3-0 – and with just one round left in the series, the five-point lead over fifth-placed Como is impossible to make up.

Napoli traveled to the Arena Garibaldi – Stadio Romeo Anconetani earlier today Sunday in the face of Pisa.
In the decisive match, Højlund showed the way. He set up Scott McTominay’s opening goal, and made it 3-0 in injury time.
Wanted to stay at Manchester United – but the Napoli loan came to the rescue
Although Ruben Amorim made it clear at the end of last year’s transfer window that Hojlund had no future in Manchester, the Dane himself wanted to stay at Old Trafford. Nevertheless, the loan to Napoli proved to be the perfect solution for all parties.
Hojlund scored 26 goals in 95 appearances for Manchester United. But in the 2024/25 season – just before he left for Italy – he only scored four goals in 32 Premier League games. In Naples, he has been given a new lease of life. Back in Serie A, he has 15 goals in 43 games. He has also taken on a far bigger role than expected, as Romelu Lukaku’s injury problems have kept the Belgian down to just seven games – and only one from the start – this season.

A loss for United – but also a rare high five
For Manchester United, €44 million represents a significant loss, compared to the €75 million (plus 10 in bonuses) they paid Atalanta in July 2023. Still, this is the fifth-highest transfer fee the club has ever received – and the amount is just enough to avoid a loss on the player’s book value. In other words: They go to zero, but it still hurts.
