Karl Darlow is ready for Manchester United. The 35-year-old comes on a free transfer and will be a backup for Senne Lammens – and it is the second time in two days that Michael Carrick has strengthened the squad.

Manchester United have signed experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The 35-year-old joined Leeds in 2023 after stints at Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, taking over as the first goalkeeper ahead of Lucas Perri last season. He played 22 Premier League games and kept five clean sheets.

Now he is ready for United on a two-year contract, with an option for another year.

Darlow: “A special opportunity”

Darlow states to the club’s official website:

“I am incredibly proud to sign for Manchester United. I will be part of an excellent group of goalkeepers, and I look forward to pushing each other to maintain the highest standards – as this club demands.

“This is a really special opportunity. Everyone can see that it’s an exciting time for the club, and I’m looking forward to playing my part in supporting my teammates and helping to drive the group forward.

Darlow to support Lammens

Senne Lammens is the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at United, despite a nightmarish World Cup in which he came on for Thibaut Courtois in the quarter-finals against Spain – and made a blunder that cost Belgium the deciding factor.

André Onana has left for Trabzonspor on another season-long loan, while Altay Bayındır is pushing to leave the club to get more first-team football.

United’s sporting director Jason Wilcox says:

“Karl has shown that he can perform at the highest level. His work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are very happy to be able to add a player of his quality and experience to our goalkeeper group.

United active in the transfer market

Darlow is United’s second signing in two days. Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea on Monday in a deal worth around £50 million. In addition, Michael Carrick is in the process of strengthening his midfield with Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa – the Belgian is in talks to move to United.
