Manchester United were unable to strengthen their attack or defence, and their only signing outside midfield was a backup goalkeeper.
Bringing in a new centre-back must be one of their long-term priorities, if only to ease the pressure on the duo of Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro.
Manchester United are now reportedly interested in signing Tottenham centre-back van de Ven in 2027, as they want to strengthen their defence.
The report claims that van de Ven’s ability to play on the left side of the defence appeals to United and that they are following him closely at the moment.
It is suggested that Tottenham could demand around £90 million to let Van de Ven go. It remains to be seen whether United are willing to pay that.
It is unclear whether Van de Ven would be interested in a move to United, as he appears to be happy at Spurs after signing a new long-term contract.
Signing Van de Ven in 2027 would be a very positive signing for the Red Devils. The Netherlands international would be a huge upgrade from the current left-back centre-back Martinez, offering more in terms of ball skills, speed and defensive understanding.
Getting him out of Tottenham definitely won’t be easy, but he could be perfect for the left centre-back position.
Martinez has struggled to deliver consistent performances in recent years, in part due to struggling with injuries.
Van de Ven would be a huge upgrade for United and they should do everything they can to get him to the club.
Van de Ven may not be worth the £90 million Tottenham can charge for him, but if they somehow manage to negotiate the sum down, it would be a smart signing for the Manchester club.
