The Manchester club is preparing for homegrown players to disappear to a top European club.
JJ Gabriel, a 15-year-old striker from Manchester United, is once again in the middle of the debate after Mick Brown – a former scout and assistant at the club – questioned his situation at Old Trafford in ‘Football Insider’.

The statements come as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are linked to the player’s future, after he has asked to cancel his registration with Manchester United.
🚨🚨|🗣️| Former scout Mick Brown on JJ Gabriel’s situation at United:
🎙️ “There is a feeling that Manchester United could be better off without JJ Gabriel. No matter how obvious his talent is, this situation has cast doubt on his character and the people around him. Is that the type of player you want at the club?”
🎙️ “When someone scores, everyone runs up to him, jumps and hugs. But sometimes, when JJ Gabriel scores, yes, they go over to celebrate with him, give him a high-five, and then they just jog back. He doesn’t seem to get the same welcome.”

JJ Gabriel and the concerns about the situation at Manchester United
Brown, who worked for many years in Manchester United’s sports department, believes the conflict surrounding JJ Gabriel’s departure may have caused problems within the youth structure. His assessment is based on what he claims to have observed in matches for the U21 team.
The former scout noticed differences in how his teammates celebrate when JJ Gabriel scores. By his interpretation, the players congratulate him, but the celebrations are less enthusiastic than after other goals.
Brown also linked this perception to the player’s contractual and sporting situation. JJ Gabriel asked in September to cancel his registration with Manchester United, after he had trained with the first team under Michael Carrick – but without being selected for the expected squad against Brighton.
The club denied the request and keeps the player registered. The situation is particularly significant because of his age: JJ Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 – a date that could affect the legal possibilities of a transfer and a potential connection to another club.
Real Madrid and Barcelona follow JJ Gabriel’s case
The dispute has put JJ Gabriel on the market even before he can sign a professional contract. Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich are among the clubs linked with his future in reports from September.
Real Madrid were looking into the details of a possible deal and, according to AS, even contacted Manchester United to hear about the situation. The player was also in Barcelona with his family while talks about his future were ongoing.
However, Barcelona’s stance has changed since the initial reports. Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, recently denied that the club is negotiating for JJ Gabriel – meaning that a potential deal with the Catalan club is no longer on the table.
Bayern Munich is also in the picture. According to reports from Sky Sports and AS, the German club is still interested, and the player’s representatives have been in contact with several European players.
JJ Gabriel’s next move
The case surrounding JJ Gabriel is now entering a critical phase due to one specific point: his birthday on October 6. The player is still tied to Manchester United while his departure request is processed, but interested clubs are exploring ways to secure his transfer.
For Manchester United, the immediate goal is to decide whether to keep the striker or prepare for his departure – while Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich remain in the spotlight. Brown’s statements represent a personal opinion and not an official club position. JJ Gabriel’s future will therefore depend on the player’s own decision, his compliance and the legal terms that apply to a transfer.
