Manchester United have “opened the door” for Marcus Rashford to return to the club this summer, according to a report from the newspaper AS. There is still a lot of uncertainty about the striker’s future.

The 28-year-old has not been part of the Red Devils’ plans for the past season and a half. A break with then-coach Ruben Amorim led to the England international going on loan to Aston Villa for the second half of the 2024/25 season.

A short but successful stay at Villa Park eventually ended with Rashford being loaned to Barcelona for this season. The loan agreement included an option for a permanent transfer for approximately £26 million.

Doubts creeping in in Barcelona

After Rashford showed plenty of good tact in the Blaugrana shirt, doubts began to creep in around whether the clause would be triggered. The reason? Anthony Gordon signed for Barcelona early in the summer transfer window.

This has led to the clause now expiring after the deadline of 15 June. Thus, there is complete uncertainty about where the star can go next.

But now it looks like a place back in the Manchester United squad could be on the cards.

Carrick wants Rashford back

According to the report from AS, Manchester United have opened the way for Rashford to return to the first team, amid all the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The report claims that Michael Carrick is passionate about getting the 28-year-old back into action at Old Trafford. He has even spoken to the star about that possibility.

It is unclear whether this will change Rashford’s own attitude. He has apparently leaned more towards returning to Barcelona, with other reports claiming that he is willing to take a pay cut to join the Blaugrana.

Avisen AS writes that Barcelona have not ruled out the possibility of a new transfer for the versatile star – but that it is currently unlikely.

Wages still a major obstacle

Bayern Munich is one of several clubs that have been linked with Rashford. But his salary is still a significant obstacle for the interested parties.

This could end up with a stay at Manchester United being inevitable. And since Carrick has already aired the idea for Rashford, it could be the start of him becoming a star again at Old Trafford.

Why Carrick is a perfect fit for Rashford’s return

Rashford’s exit from Manchester United happened during Amorim’s tenure – something that didn’t exactly work out optimally for the Portuguese head coach.

It seemed as if the manager was struggling to get the players to believe in their ideas. That also applied to the England international, who has since shown in other circles just how good he can be.

Now Amorim is gone, and Carrick has taken his place. Thus, Rashford can return to an environment where he can flourish again.

Freedom and the Champions League

The new head coach has shown that he has an even temperament. That makes it unlikely that he will annoy the players with his crew treatment.

Carrick is willing to give some freedom to get the best out of his players in the attacking areas. That would suit Rashford perfectly on the left wing.

Add to that a squad that can fight for places, and the fact that Champions League football is back. Then a return for the 28-year-old can suddenly work for all parties.

It remains to be seen whether that ship has sailed. But one thing is certain: a return will definitely strengthen the ranks offensively.
