UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi following incidents during the meeting between Fenerbahce and Lyon in the Champions League qualifiers. Now, the Turkish club confirms that both stars are under investigation.
It was after the end of the game at Groupama Stadium that it really caught fire. Fenerbahce had just secured a 2-1 win and advancement, but the jubilation quickly turned into chaos.

Greenwood, 24, is said to have been involved in a heated argument immediately after the final whistle, while Guendouzi is accused of inciting Lyon fans as he left the pitch. The atmosphere quickly escalated, and the clashes continued into the players’ tunnel – where personnel from both teams were dragged into the conflict.
According to witnesses, a person dressed in a Lyon tracksuit appeared and performed what is described as a “flying kick” towards Guendouzi. At the same time, several Lyon supporters tried to storm the pitch during Fenerbahce’s celebrations.
The club confirms investigation
Fenerbahce has now issued an official statement:
“Following the second match of the Champions League play-off round, UEFA has initiated a disciplinary process against our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as against the club. Our club will present the necessary defences to UEFA’s relevant committees to safeguard the rights of both the players and Fenerbahce. All necessary information and documentation will be provided and developments will be closely monitored. This will be communicated to the public.”
Guendouzi rages against Lyon fans
After the game, Guendouzi vented his frustration over the treatment he received from the stands:
“When 60,000 people are taunting your family, your mother and your children – even before the game – and no one from the refereeing team is asking the stadium to calm down, then there is a problem. I know that in France they would have stopped the game in such cases. For 90 minutes, even during the warm-up, my family was scolded,” said an upset Guendouzi.
“It hits you hard. If you’re going to swear with each other, it has to go both ways. They mocked my mother and my family – for me, it was disrespectful.
Fenerbahce’s head coach Ismail Kartal fully backed his French midfielder:
“As a team, we all lined up to support Guendouzi. That’s what team spirit is all about.
Greenwood back in the Champions League – could face his old club
Greenwood, who left Manchester United for Marseille in the summer, has now moved on to Fenerbahce on a four-year contract. The Turks are qualified for the Champions League main tournament for the first time since 2009 – where they face big clubs such as Roma, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Atlético Madrid.
And with Manchester United back in the Champions League, hopes are alive for a potential showdown between Greenwood and his old club – provided both teams advance from league play.
For now, it remains to be seen what sanctions UEFA will land on. But one thing is certain: Greenwood’s resurrection in Europe is unlikely to be tacit.
