Eddie Howe’s shock departure from Newcastle was confirmed on Thursday morning – and just hours later, a signing could be on his way through the door. Newcastle have triggered the purchase clause of one of Europe’s most promising goalkeeper talents.
Howe informed Newcastle management that he wanted to leave the club several weeks ago, but agreed to stay on until the club found a replacement. Now Al Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle is the surprising favourite to take over at St. James’ Park.

Howe’s desire to leave was largely triggered by the departure of his best players. First there was Anthony Gordon’s departure for Barcelona for £70 million – then Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham for a staggering £92.5 million.
And it hardly stops there. Captain Bruno Guimarães is pushing to go to Arsenal, while Manchester United are considering signing Lewis Hall.
Newcastle’s summer is coming to an end – having lost several of their best players and their most successful manager in modern times.
Hornicek ready for Newcastle
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have triggered Lukas Hornicek’s £24.5 million buy-in clause at Portuguese side Braga. The goal is to make him the first goalkeeper next season.
A transfer is said to be about to be completed – and it comes as a relief to the club, who have been following the 24-year-old for over a year.
Hornicek has developed into one of Europe’s most promising goalkeepers. He played 14 games in the Europa League last season and helped Braga to the semi-finals before losing to Freiburg.
In total, the Czech international has 88 appearances for Braga. His arrival continues the renewal of Newcastle’s goalkeeping department – the club have already signed France Under-21 international Ewen Jaouen from Reims for £18.5 million.
But Hornicek has always been seen as the man who will be the club’s long-term first goalkeeper.
Pope on his way out?
Bringing in two young goalkeepers has brought Nick Pope closer to the exit door. Pope has been fantastic for Newcastle since his transfer from Burnley four years ago – and played a big part in the Carabao Cup triumph and Champions League campaigns.
But the 34-year-old’s level dropped dramatically last season, and with his contract expiring in June 2027, Newcastle are willing to listen to bids for him.
One thing is for sure: Newcastle are building for the future – but right now it’s chaos at St. James’ Park.
