Roy Keane and Paul Scholes believe that Manchester United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe should appoint Luis Enrique as manager in the summer. Arsenal legend Ian Wright, on the other hand, has a completely different favourite.

Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager of Manchester United in January 2026, following the departure of Ruben Amorim. Under Carrick, United have secured a top-five finish in the Premier League – and will play in the Champions League next season.

The vast majority of experts believe that Michel Carrick is the “favourite” for the managerial role. Ratcliffe also wants to consider former England manager Gareth Southgate. Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and Andoni Iraola (who will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season) are also on the list.

Keane: “Carrick lacks experience, but wins games

United legend Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, however, would like to see PSG manager Luis Enrique take over. They made their comments during the last episode of The Overlap, after Gary Neville read out a list of candidates.

Luis Enrique has won Ligue 1 in both 2024 and 2025, as well as the Champions League last season. PSG have also reached the final of the Champions League this year and are likely to win Ligue 1 again.

Keane said:

“Carrick worked under José Mourinho. He worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjær. He had a short period as manager after Ole was there – three games. So they have to believe that he has the personality needed to take the step forward.

“Of course, he lacks experience. But he wins football matches. Of course, there are problems to fix in midfield, and the way they are so open at the back is ridiculous.

“But we go back to it: In any industry – are there better alternatives? On paper, it does. But that doesn’t mean they would succeed.

“I like Enrique. For what he has done. He has experience – also at the international level. He seems like a good character. His team makes him run. Any manager who gets his top players running gets a big thumbs up from me.

“But people don’t watch Manchester United anymore. He probably thinks: “I’m not going to United with all their problems. I want to win the big trophies every year.”

Scholes: “If Enrique is available, I’ll go for him”

Paul Scholes was tight:

“From that list?” If Enrique is available, I would probably go for him.

Wright: “Carrick can win the Premier League”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes United should make Carrick a permanent manager – and has boldly claimed that “the Red Devils” will win the Premier League under him.

When asked if Carrick would be able to win the league with United, Wright replied:

“I think Michael Carrick would have done it.

Wright was asked if he meant it because of what Mikel Arteta has done at Arsenal in recent years.

“What it shows, Gary, is that it can be done,” Wright explained.

“He has the kind of character and persona that can handle what happens. He can control it. He doesn’t care about the noise or what’s going on around. He seems to have got the players going.

“Now it obviously depends on the players who come in, and what purchases United make to get back to the top. Because you can see that it doesn’t seem like there is much more that is needed.
