Two significant things have happened since Barcelona and Manchester United last talked about making Marcus Rashford’s loan deal permanent. – Manchester United have qualified for the Champions League and Barcelona have won La Liga.

Both completely change the balance of power between the clubs. – In the contract with Marcus Rashford, there is a bonus of 25% at the same time as the salary reduction that was introduced a few years ago is reversed. At least 25% is a lot when we know that Rashford pulls in £10.4 million in wages. Barcelona know Manchester United are desperate to remove him from their payrolls. – They also know that the success and the atmosphere are hard to leave. Marcus Rashford really wants to stay and will actively work for it, including taking a pay cut and putting pressure on Manchester United.

Barcelona does not want to pay both the sum agreed in the buyout clause and demands a cheaper buyout and a reduction in wages.

This time they will agree!

His contract at Manchester United expires in 2028.

Marcus Rashford’s journey so far

Marcus Rashford was born in Manchester in 1997 and entered Manchester United’s youth academy as a seven-year-old. He made his first-team debut in February 2016 at the age of just 18, scoring two goals in his first game – in the Europa League against Midtjylland. Three days later, he scored another two goals in his Premier League debut against Arsenal, taking pretty much the entire football world by storm.

Rashford quickly developed into a key player for United, known for his explosive speed, technical skills, and ability to score spectacular goals. He has won the FA Cup twice (2016 and 2024), the League Cup twice (2017 and 2023) and the Europa League in 2017. In 2020, he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his tireless work against baby food poverty in the UK – a campaign that forced the government to expand the school feeding scheme during the holidays.

In recent years, however, Rashford’s career at United has been marked by ups and downs. After a fantastic 2022/23 season with 30 goals, a difficult 2023/24 season followed in which he struggled with both form and confidence. In the summer of 2025, it became clear that United wanted to loan him out, and Barcelona came on the scene.

At Barcelona, Rashford has been given a new lease of life. He has become an important piece for Hansi Flick, contributing both goals and assists, and helping to secure the club’s La Liga title. Now it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will trigger the purchase option of around €60 million – or if Rashford will return to Manchester United.
