This season, Aston Villa have become a classic example of what happens when you sell your biggest stars window after window without listening to your manager’s wishes. – This summer, it peaked when Aston Villa sold Morgan Rogers for €138 million to Chelsea and tried to replace the midfield general with several players.

In addition to Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa have sold stars such as Esri Konza, Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans and Donyell Malen. “You don’t do that with impunity, and the ‘penalty’ came sooner than many thought and the blame, it goes to the manager.

Has Martin Ødegaard – now Arsenal are going for Norway’s next, big super talent

Concern is growing at Aston Villa around Unai Emery after a poor start to the season.

Unai Emery is being put under the microscope because of the results after the 1-2 loss to Nottingham Forest. The Birmingham side are still winless in the Premier League after four games, and have only managed to collect one point out of a possible twelve.

The 2-3 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League is the team’s only official win this season. Looking at all competitions, Aston Villa’s record shows one win, one draw and four defeats in six games.

Aston Villa continue winless in the Premier League
The domestic situation has worsened after four games. Aston Villa opened the Premier League with a 4-0 loss to Brighton, followed by a 0-1 loss to Arsenal, and managed just one point with a 0-0 draw with Hull City.

Nottingham Forest extended their streak with a 1-2 win at Villa Park on Saturday. Emery’s side failed to score in the first half and conceded the first goal in the 46th minute, when Liam Delap put the away side in the lead.

Alysson managed to equalise in the 74th minute with Aston Villa’s first goal in the Premier League. But the comeback was in vain, as Igor Jesus scored in the 88th minute to decide the final result – leaving the team winless for another league round.

The attacking numbers reflect the problem. After 360 minutes in the Premier League, Villa have scored just one goal and conceded seven. The bottom line is three losses and one draw, with only one point secured.

Unai Emery under pressure over results
The focus is now on Unai Emery. The European win earlier in the week had given the manager a breakthrough result, but the loss to Nottingham Forest has brought the team back to its previous situation.

The 2-3 win against Club Brugge took place on September 8. John McGinn, Emiliano Buendía and Nicolas Jackson scored the three goals that allowed Aston Villa to secure their first win of the 2026/27 season.

Apart from that game, the results have been disappointing. The team also suffered a 2–1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, which means losses in four out of six official matches since the start of the season.

The position in the Premier League increases the immediate pressure. After the loss to Forest, Aston Villa stand with one point and are in the lower part of the table after the first four league rounds.

The upcoming schedule offers two immediate opportunities to turn things around. Aston Villa travel to Coventry City on September 16 in the Carabao Cup, followed by a game against Tottenham on September 19 in the Premier League. That league game will be the next test for Emery in his quest for his first domestic win of the season.
