A giant at Anfield, a giant in the Premier League. 352 games in the red shirt, 203 in the sky blue City shirt. James Milner made a final round in the Premier League at Brighton from 2023. With 658 Premier League games on his CV, the centre-back has now decided to give his 40-year-old – still young – body free.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to end my playing career,” Milner began on Instagram on Monday.

James Milner retires
“When I made my debut for Leeds, who I supported as a child, at the age of 16 and became the youngest goalscorer in the Premier League, I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on.
Milner is grateful for all the experiences along the way, which have taken him to Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Leeds and most recently Brighton.
“I leave football with incredible pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me much more than I could have ever imagined, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities it has given me. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey,” Milner wrote.
