When Gareth Southgate entered his final spell as England manager, it seemed like he sent out a job application for his next job, this one in the Premier League. He stated in an interview that the national team job had equipped him to manage one of the biggest clubs in the league. This was in 2024. For Manchester United boss Ratcliffe, Southgate has long been one of the favourites to lead United. Two years later, Southgate tells us what is not going to happen.

Southgate has regularly been linked with Manchester United in recent years, now the job is again potentially open. Michael Carrick doesn’t get too many months to show progress, where the season so far has given a single upturn with a 4-0 win against Sabah FK in the Champions League. Which in itself says it all.

With Southgate as one of Ratcliffe’s favourites, it is now being questioned whether the unemployed manager is still relevant.

In an interview with The Amol Rajan Connection, Southgate was asked about the possibility of returning to coach the Premier League.

“I don’t envisage a scenario where that’s going to happen,” Southgate begins.

“Towards the end of my time with the England national team, I lost the joy of it, at least for a while. Winning kept me going, but in the end I didn’t even enjoy the win for more than a few minutes. So I’ve hardly watched any football,” Southgate says candidly.

“I went to the FA Cup final to see my team, Crystal Palace, win their first trophy. I haven’t been to a football stadium since. So my desire to be involved in football has changed,” the 56-year-old concluded. Basta boom.

In other words, Gareth Southgate is not relevant for the Manchester United job anyway.
