There is nothing new about Real Madrid’s interest in Scott McTominay, but the lack of agreement on a new contract with Napoli has woken up the Spanish capital club.
Several Italian media outlets write today that Real Madrid have contacted Scott McTominay’s representatives regarding a possible move to the Bernabéu, according to reports in Italy, as uncertainty still affects his future at Napoli.
Frustration at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes invites another suitor
McTominay, who has been a revelation since joining Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024, is now in the third year of his four-year contract at Napoli.
It was reported in August that Napoli were preparing to offer the Scotland international a long-term contract extension until 2030 with an option for a further year – but no deal has yet been reached.
In fact, as negotiations continue to stall, Real Madrid have been in contact with McTominay’s people, according to a report by Il Mattino, who claim that they have been investigating his uncertain future.
The aforementioned report also claims that several Premier League clubs are expected to express interest in the 29-year-old midfielder, who was linked with a return to England this summer.
“He’s my boy” – José Mourinho is a big fan of Scott McTominay
If a move to the Spanish giants comes to fruition, McTominay will be reunited with former Manchester United manager José Mourinho, who made his debut against Arsenal in the 2016/17 season.
Mourinho has publicly expressed his gratitude for the Scot on several occasions, calling him “my boy” after Rio Ferdinand asked him to talk about the players he liked to coach the most.
“When I look at Scott McTominay,” he began. “Pogba was on the bench and I played against him in Sevilla. He’s my boy. When I go from club to club, I find my boys. And they will always be my boys.
His admiration for McTominay was so great that Mourinho named him his coach’s “Player of the Year” in the summer of 2018, after creating the award specifically to recognize the midfielder’s outstanding season.

Scott McTominay still keeps in touch with José Mourinho
McTominay, who joined United as a five-year-old before playing 255 games for his childhood club, has often thanked Mourinho for making his breakthrough.
In an interview on the High Performance Podcast, the 29-year-old spoke about their emotional conversation on Mourinho’s last day at United. He also confirmed that they are still keeping in touch.
“The day he left, I saw him in the corridor, and he invited me in. I didn’t know what to say. I was devastated. It was hard,” McTominay said.
“This guy means so much to me and has given me all the dreams I could ever wish for – and now he’s gone. I didn’t know what to think. I was ‘uh’ and ‘aah’. I just said, ‘Thank you for the opportunity, you’ve been a real legend to me, good luck with what you do next.’
“We still have contact sometimes. If I’ve had a good game, he lets me know. He sends a message and says ‘well done, boy’ – as he always calls me. Those were great times, and I’m so grateful for him.
