At the weekend, another Michael Carrick win came with Manchester United. 2-1 against Brentford, another three points into the table account and now 11 reassuring points before the Champions League ticket is threatened. With four games left in the Premier League season, this is something United with Carrick at the helm will not let go. Carrick as permanent United manager is being praised by supporters, while the United management is still keeping their options open – regardless of whether Carrick wins all of the remaining games.

Various English media outlets are reporting disagreements within the Man Utd management over whether Michael Carrick has the right repertoire and experience to lead Manchester United past near-success. A few games as a super substitute when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in 2021, 136 games as Middlesbrough coach and now interim United coach for the rest of the season, says a lot about Carrick’s potential, the question the United bosses are asking themselves is whether it is enough.

On Thursday, The Telegraph reports that Andoni Iraola will receive a phone call with an invitation to talks after the season. Bournemouth’s successful manager has all his focus on the remaining Premier League games that will give the club the historic Europa League ticket, but after that, according to the English newspaper, he stands as a strong candidate to take over the coaching job at Manchester United when he walks out as a free agent.

What Andoni Iraola has achieved with Bournemouth since 2022 is pretty amazing. The Spanish coach took over a club on the road to relegation, turned the ship around with the confidence of the club management and players, has received the right reinforcements – and has climbed to 12th place in the Premier League, then 9th, to fight for the Europa League ticket with four games left this season.

This turnaround and continuity of play this season has seen Manchester United turn to Iraola, as the strongest competitor to Carrick.
